A new parking policy has been submitted through advocate Wasim Ahmed Quadri for the Supreme Court’s approval.
The Policy indicates the following:
1. Suggests steep hike in parking fees to deter people from frequent use of personal vehicles
2. Proposes upping 4% ad valorem tax on cars costing over Rs. 4 lakhs
3. Special task force for removal of encroachments on roads, kitchen gardens and private gardens on govt land (The force’s work will be directly supervised by the chief secretary and the Lt. Governor, to whom it will submit periodic reports.)
4. Construction cost for parking facilities to be recovered from users
Major modifications in building bylaws:
1. Parking inside 60sq m plot mandatory
2. Basement parking legal
3. Rooftop parking to be allowed
The new parking policy awaits the clearance by the Supreme Court. The move is to reduce the commotion, which is the outcome of nearly 45 lakhs vehicles on the roads of Delhi.
It puts the onus on all road-owning agencies to ensure that the roads are clear of all types of encroachments.
The move of suggesting the above policy is a considerate one and would also help in making the environment more healthier by refraining the movement of vehicles which inturn causes pollution like air, noise etc., and adds to the agony of people when they get stuck up in traffic jams.
The modifications in the building bylaws would help in overcoming the parking problems.
The above policies are to help the Delhites to overcome the problems being faced by them due to the increasing numbers of vehicles and must meet the approval of the Supreme Court to ease out the problems being faced by them.
What does the Forum has to say about it? Comments are anticipated both for and against the motion.

This is a welcome gesture and if supreme court approves this it will definitly bring respite to the residents of Delhi. On this i would like to bring every ones attention to the fact that Finance Minister recently reduced excise duty on small cars. This would further increase the number of vehicles on the roads. I think that this should not be encouraged and governement should make endeavours towards providing better means of public tranport too so that the number of vehicles are reduced so as to decrease congestions and traffic load on the roads.
