Two years back Mr Tata said – ‘I am unfortunately a person who has often said, you put a gun to my head and pull the trigger or take the gun away, I won’t move my head.’ Finally, the devil has won and Ms. Mamta Devil Banerjee has succeeded in pulling the gun on Mr. Tata’s head. Yesterday was a black day in history of West Bengal when after countless efforts to reconcile issues with West Bengal Govertment, RNT announced his decision to pull out completely from Singur. This decision comes in the back drop of the kick off of biggest event of the year for West Bengal – Durga Puja. It is extremely sad for thousands of workers who were working in Nano plant and have lost their means of livelihood to satisfy the ego and political whims of Ms Banerjee.
From business and emotional point of view, one can understand how economical and painful this decision must have been for a man of ethics like Mr. Tata. 500 crore rupees which is one – third of total investment in Singur goes down as sunk cost. To top it all, it has created a bad image not only for West Bengal but for entire country. This was a remarkable achievement of Mr. Buddhabeb government that Tata Motors chose West Bengal to roll out the cheapest car in this world. Right from the announcement of project, the world was watching it very closely and could have given unexpected mileage to West Bengal government but for one person all the efforts went down the drain. It also shows that industry and livelihood in India can be game to political whims of a single person.
West Bengal will continue to enjoy the political drama and I am sure, the entire NANO – Singur episode is going to be the part of election manifesto for the political parties in the next elections. While ruling government is going to put the blame game on Ms Banerjee for the flight of industry from state, she will continue to cry crocodile tears and once again it will be innocent poor people who will be the ultimate losers. To sum up, I am forced to say that nobody cares for the workers and poor people whether it is Mamta or the ruling government or else nothing could have stopped the present government to pursue Tata Motors to stay in West Bengal. If grapevine is to be believed, even the present government is somewhere happy that they can draw enough mileage from the present scenario by putting the blame on Mamta Banerjee. Politics can not be cheaper than this and it shows that there is no place for humanity in politics.
All said and done, it is a very sad decision for both Tata Motors and poor people of Bengal as so much has gone into Singur in last two years and for the poor people, the situation is more worse who are now jobless. The statement by Mr. Tata on this sad decision speaks the emotions of an Industrialist who failed in front of cheap politics –
“I am extremely pained. I must tell you, I flew back from Germany, arriving in Delhi this morning, had a shower and came here. It is extremely painful to take this decision that shatters many dreams which many of us had. I am sure this is great disappointment to the people who worked on the project on the ground, much more than even for me. But there is also a feeling that we are doing the right thing because there is no other option,”
