The government today notified two more Special Economic Zones – that of Hexaware and Medicaps — taking the total number of notified zones to 22.
Hexaware is setting up an 11 hectare Information Technology SEZ at Siruseri in Tamil Nadu, while Medicaps is establishing a 12.25 hectares IT SEZ at Indore in Madhya Pradesh.
The 22 notified zones are among the 150 SEZs that have been cleared by the Board of Approval so far, G K Pillai, Special Secretary in the Commerce Ministry, said here.
Other notified zones include Reliance’s petroleum and petrochemical SEZ in Gujarat, Adani’s multi-product SEZ in Gujarat, IT major Wipro’s three SEZs in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and Biocon’s biotech zone in Karnataka.
Of the 22 SEZs, 12 zones are in the IT and ITeS sectors, while other sectors include pharma, footwear, gems and jewellery and non-conventional energy equipment.
Pillai said the Board has about 225 fresh applications and would meet in September to consider these proposals following the lifting of the cap on the number of SEZs by the Empowered Group of Ministers.
The rush of applications has also eased after the EGoM decision, he said.
The EGoM had last week permitted the Board of Approval to consider new proposals while asking it to separately monitor IT SEZs as more than half of the approved zones were in the information technology and related sectors.
The EGoM had also decided to meet again after five months or till 75 non-IT SEZs become operational, whichever was earlier, he said. PTI
