How many times this has happened that we see an advertisement in newspaper from a mobile operator offering much cheaper rates or better suited plan than presently we are subscribed to. Than, we think that perhaps we could take this plan, but the thing that stops us from doing so is loyalty with our mobile number. How will we announce our new number to all associations?
Â
At last, the solution is here!!!! North Carolina based company TEKELEC, renowned telecom solution provider worldwide, has offered to bring its number probability technology to the Indian market. This will allow users to change from one operator to another without change of number. The technology can be used for both fixed-line and mobile networks.
Â
TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) is also planning to approve the proposal and if all goes well the scheme can be implemented in nine to twelve months.
Â
But, the arrangement is facing stiff resistance from some private players on the grounds that this will increase the costs and in turn tariffs.
Tekelec officials have assured that cost of the technology will be just around $150-200 million, which puts burden of less than $1 per subscriber. TRAI is also considering passing on the technology cost to the end users. Recently Sunil Mittal of Bharti Tele said that there company supports this move and wants this technology to be implemented at earliest.
Â
If this technology is made mandatory users will switch over networks seamlessly, which will give rise to another price war and lowering of tariffs. Thus ultimate beneficial will be the end subscriber.

I too have heard about this. This is definitly going to benefit the end users in the long run. Many times i too wanted to switch my mobile service provider so that i could get a better plan but could not do it as i was using this number for past 5 years and it was really dificult for me to change my number and distribute it throughout the industry. But if this kind of technology happens it shall do wonders for one and all.
